Got a dent or hole in your wall? You don’t need to hire a tradie.
One of the easiest ways to fix it – without screws, backing blocks, or drama – is the California patch method.
🛠️ Here’s how it works:
🧱 Step 1: Get a plasterboard offcut
You can buy a cheap “handy panel” at Bunnings for small jobs – great to keep in your DIY stash.

✂️ Step 2: Cut your patch
- Cut a square/rectangle around the damaged area.
- Cut a slightly larger patch out of your plasterboard.
- Score and snap the edges of the patch but don’t cut all the way through – leave the paper face intact on the front.
This paper “flap” will act like built-in tape.

🪛 Step 3: Glue and mud it in
- Apply joint compound around the hole.
- Press the patch into place, using the paper flap as a smooth edge.
- Feather out the joint compound over the area.
- Let dry, sand, and do a second coat if needed.
👉 Use any all-purpose joint compound, like this one:

This is one of the simplest ways to do small plaster repairs without messing around with backing pieces. Perfect if you’re prepping for an inspection, moving out of a rental, or just keeping the house tidy.
