Save money, reduce waste, and still get the job done
If you’re tackling DIY projects but don’t want to spend hundreds on tools you’ll only use once, tool libraries might be your new favourite thing.
Tool libraries are like regular libraries, but for gear:
You borrow tools instead of books, use them for your project, and then return them. They’re perfect for renters, new homeowners, or anyone trying to save space, money, or waste.
Many tool libraries in New Zealand are community-run, low-cost (or donation-based), and have surprisingly decent inventories: drills, saws, gardening gear, ladders, even wallpaper steamers in some cases.
Here’s a list of tool libraries across Aotearoa – check if there’s one near you:
🔨 Auckland
- Grey Lynn Library of Tools
- Manurewa – Beautification Trust Tool Library
- Hibiscus & Bays Tool Library
- Manurewa – The Pride Project
- Waiuku Tool Library
🛠️ Waikato
🧰 Wellington
🔧 Canterbury

If there’s no community tool library in your area, try Sharehub – a peer-to-peer platform where Kiwis rent tools and gear to each other.
You can often find:
- Power tools

It’s like Airbnb for tools – great for one-off jobs without the long-term commitment (or storage headache).
